LEAP! LOCAL SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP ACCELERATOR PROGRAM  

Jason has  coached several cohorts of social entrepreneurs across BC through 10 week program that takes them from idea to launch. This program is offered in partnership with a local community development agency and SFU’s Community Economic Development Certificate Program.

Vancouver Island Microloan Fund


Jason developed and administered the Vancouver Island Microloan Fund for 5 years. This $100,000 fund offers zero-interest loans up to $10,000 to growers and processors on Vancouver Island to increase local food production. It exists as a partnership by the Island Chefs’ Collaborative, FarmFolk CityFolk, and Vancity.

Victoria Community Food Hub

Jason is the project lead for the Victoria Community Food Hub. Born out of an identified need for better infrastructure to support island food security and unify diverse local groups working on food issues and hunger alleviation, the Food Hub is a vision currently under development. Located in central Victoria, the building will feature a 3000-square foot commercial kitchen, freezer and cooler space, and shared office space for local food groups. Kitchen and freezer space will be available for rent, supporting island farmers and local food entrepreneurs. The Hub will also serve as a storage and distribution facility for local food bank groups. 

The Victoria Community Food Hub is currently fundraising for phase one. Stay tuned for updates as this important project evolves!

Victoria Spot Prawn Festival


Jason organized the inaugural Victoria Spot Prawn Festival in 2013. The Festival celebrates local seafood, and includes both a Long Table style dinner, hosted by the Island Chefs Collaborative, and also a one-day festival featuring local artisans, musicians, crafters, and local educational groups. The festival is also an opportunity for the public to buy from local fishermen, and to sample gourmet food from local chefs.

Roofs & Roots Housing Co-operative

Jason was Project Manager for this affordable housing cooperative, helping them aquire their first property. Deliverables included walking the cooperative through finding, evaluating, choosing, an appropriate property; then helping them to secure grant funding.

Over 4 summers from 1998-2000 Jason owned and managed a wholesale perennial and herb business in central Alberta to fund his undergraduate career. This experience was deeply enriching and continues today in his passion for growing his own food, and enabling others to do the same.

Island Chefs' Food Festival 

 Jason has been the organiser for  3rd, 4th, & 5th Annual Island Chefs’ Collaborative fundraiser (2010-12). The event celebrates the best food, farms, and beverages from Vancouver Island. In a festive atmosphere the ICC raises public awareness about issues affecting the local food system as well as opportunities to initiate a wide variety of sustainable activities in there own homes. The event also serves as the main fundraiser for the ICC Farm Grant Program that has provided roughly $20,000 worth of equipment to 16 small farms on Vancouver Island - increasing the sustainability of their operations. it has also been used to cover the interest charges on the $100,000 Zero-Interest Microloan Fund.

Feast of Fields - Vancouver Island

Jason was co-organiser and financial manager of this popular annual fundraiser from 2006-2009; rasing over $100,000 during the 4 year period. The festival serves as an educational outreach and fundraiser for FarmFolk CityFolk, while providing grants to other groups working towards a sustainable food system. ‘Feast’ presents the best of seasonal local food presented by the finest chefs, farmers, and brewers in the region for 1000 guests and participants. Moving location every year to a new farm on Southern Vancouver Island, it also aims to get city folk out to meet farm folk.

An Urban Village and Farm for the University of Victoria

While at the POLIS Project on Ecological Governance at the University of Victoria, Jason co-authored a discussion paper with Michael M’Gonigle (POLIS Director). The paper examined both the possibility of using existing land to create of an urban farm for research at the University of Victoria, while increasing density to create an urban village. The paper evnetually became a chapter by the same authors in,  “Environmental Conflicts and Democracy in Canada,” edited by Laurie Adkin and in print with UBC Press.
