CaGBC - Public Sector Green Building Training

While at SSG, Jason helped to develop a training course for the Canadian Green Building Council in partnership with BuildGreen Consulting Collaborative. The course teaches staff in the public sector about incorporating green building into their work. Jason’s role was in research and in preparing the final draft document. The final product include a one-day course  being taught by the CaGBC.

Fruit Tree Project Product Line

Linking the non-profit and for-profit community, Jason brought his business and culinary background to LifeCycles’ where he developed a product line made from fruit harvested by volunteers in Greater Victoria that is processed by locally owned businesses. The proceeds are evenly split and go towards the financial sustainability of the Fruit Tree Project that supports numerous local food banks.

Training Course for IDP Facilitators

Jason was Project Manager for the development of courses for Green Buildings BC. This project drew upon Sustainability Solution Group’s expertise in adult education, LEED, green and sustainable buildings and communities, facilitation, and IDP. Project results were one full day and one half day course, a resource guide, and an on-line community. The course is currently being run by the Canadian Green Building Council.

VIHA Food Security Indicators 

Jason served as project lead for SSG, conducting background research for the development of community food security indicators for the local health authority.

Community Farms Program  

On secondment from SSG Jason helped to developed the Community Farms Program for FarmFolk/CityFolk Society. Its aim is to form groups of new farmers and to enable them to secure tenure. One of the newest farms is in Langford.

Food Resource Guide for Local BC Governments

Jason was project lead on research and initial authorship for a PHSA-UBCM-BCHC resource guide, while with SSG. The guide outlined strategies and approaches for local governments to increase community food security and support local food systems in BC.

‘An Island on the Edge’ – Documentary Film

Jason was co-producer and chief researcher for the full-length feature film on Vancouver Island’s food security. The film examines our food history and food future, including regulation and legislation that impact small-scale farmers. The film has been shown at community events, at political party conventions, and toured Canada as part of a community film festival. Directed and produced by Nick Versteeg, written by Don Genova.
